It’s Sunday morning
and I’m sitting in my room in Green Road, in the suburb Blackrock of County Dublin in Ireland. Woops! Didn’t I just arrive from my trip to New Zealand, Australia and Singapore? Where did the great summer go to?
That was quick! During the last weeks I sorted out stuff, had the first two weeks Orientation week as well as first courses and met lots of new people. Some of them had the idea to put up a group on facebook, where international, students from the Proby residences on campus and off campus could post events, trips and so on. A great idea and the first event took place last night! But let’s start from the beginning…
Blue sky, sunshine and a garden in the backyard of a house…
As many of you know I have been to Ireland already. During a beautiful morning I sat in the garden in the backyard of the house and thought about my last time in this green country. 2008, a summer semester, which was compulsory to do a semester abroad at the university I attended in Germany. It was included in my bachelor studies anyway. I missed five points in one exam, so they didn’t let me overseas to New Zealand. Also I had to accept that I couldn’t afford the tuition fees at the University Auckland, so I had to go on with waiting for New Zealand. That moment was very devastating for me, but I decided that some day I will go to New Zealand which in the end I did :) Also I decided if I can’t go to that far far Island, I could go to the closer one – Ireland
There I met those amazing people in my apartment: Kelly, Jen, Amy, Alice and Lauren. These five american girls made me forget my five missing points pretty quick. First night out to the Wicked Wolf (Karaoke night *yeah*), the first weekend out to Howth and during the first days Kelly was so nice to help me getting to know the bus routes, a cellphone no. and all sorts of stuff and let’s not forget the great college parties in our apartment
(yep, these red cups do really exist, not just in the films).
My former roomates from America
As well I had a wonderful time my friends Cathy and Patrick, whom I met during my Spanish language course made this time very special with many nights at O’Neills and lots of Irish live music. Not to forget to mention my two Irish girls Suzi an Clodagh, whom I met during a Spanish language course in Alicante and helped me so much with having a fun day at IKEA and Dunnes to get stuff sorted out this time, but also last time going and hanging out having pizza and dance nights. And my good friend Vik, whom I went climbing as well for drinks to Temple Bar lots and met again back in his home country Singapore.
Thank you all for one of the best times in my life! I’m happy that I’m still in contact with many of these friends – you made this semester abroad very special! I’m sending you lots of hugs with this report
All in all this semester abroad in 2008 was amazing, just to remember that I meet J.K. Rowling :) – now I will enjoy a whole ‘new’ year! I’m so excited for this new adventure!
Pigs, Irish dancing, mud and eating soup in the rain…
After receiving several offers from universities I decided to go to back to UCD for my Master’s. Here I am now :) Before my courses would start I’m joining the Orientation week and met many very nice people. The highlight of this week has been a trip up north out of Dublin. Saturday noon we hopped on the bus and round about two hours later we reached a little farm. On our way the bus past Trim Castle which was one of the sets of the film ‘Braveheart’. Definitely something for not just the male fans of the film out there
So we arrived at this little farm and first thing we did is meeting the pig family (piglets are so cute and the sow was massive and huge), a friendly white horse, turkeys and geese.

After this little meeting our group was shown into a dark barn where we had our first and very funny Irish dance lesson! Jenny, Andrea, Tim, Bryce, Jens, two more people (sorry forgot your names) and me, we were one dancing group and had to stand boy girl facing each other in two lines. We did pretty good – move on your spot, in the middle, back, on the spot, cross, spot, in the middle, back, on the spot, cross, on the spot, take opposite partners hand and move in circles and back to the spot, raise our arms and other lines goes trough…I think that was the choreography (what do you say Jenny?, who did Irish dancing years ago). What a fun warm up
Next stop another barn where already some people of our two busses played a game – jump with the rope, which was made out of hay! There was a competition between several countries going on and people were cheering for each other, Mauritius and France were really good. Then we got separated into three groups, where Dan, Rocky, Saeed and I would as everyone else bake Irish bread (‘catch the egg’), milk a cow (poor cow, hopefully people did milk her as they got told ‘soft’), play some hurling (the fastest grass game) and get to know more about the bug landscape (the ‘Book of Kells’, very old Irish book, was found in such a bug landscape).
In the end fellow students Dan, Rocky and I had warm soup with our baked bread outside, because the house was full. First it was nice and then the rain started. Well, we are clever people otherwise we wouldn’t study master’s degree
so opened an umbrella and enjoyed the funny moment with warm tea!
You are not undergraduates anymore! You are master students, so we expect a lot more from you!
That was the core of all the in various explanations in all my three courses during last week. And we really have a lot to do, but that’s what I’m here for! :) This first week of courses had it’s up and down’s however I’m very happy about my decision to enrol for this certain MSc Strategic Management and Planning programme and to be back in Ireland.
Highlight of this week – the International Dinner on Saturday and the arrival of three big parcels from my parents in Germany on Friday! Friday morning those parcels arrived and I enjoyed unpacking them finding more cloth, sweets and other stuff in it. Fun to do for Friday and Saturday and this time I didn’t mind the little chaos in my room, but soon everything had its own spot in my room :) Thank you so much mum and dad!
Then some people had the great idea that everyone should bring a famous dish of their country and we have a big dinner together. Soon this amazing idea was put on the calendar of the so called group ‘Smurfit: Master’s of Class 2010/11’ and people had many conversations during the week about what each of them should cook.
fun, fun, fun
My dish – German potato salad with the recipe of my granny! Dominik, another German guy joined in with sausages and we had the famous Christmas dish from Germany *lol*. The dinner was set 8pm and after I arrived, set down it was amazing to observe the coming of more and more people with their dishes. The table was overfilled with wonderful food. It was sooo delicious! Me as a hobbit I enjoyed to taste here and there :) Later the evening most of us went to the local pub ‘Wicked Wolf in Blackrock! You may want to know which nations were represented; here we go (as far as I can remember) – Ireland with Irish stew, rice pudding, carrot cake and Irish bread, China with spicy dishes Tofu and Seafood, America with homemade Macaroni and Cheese, France Crepes, Switzerland with hash browns dish and a certain meat as finger food, Canada with homemade pancakes and maple syrup, New Zealand with great fish, Germany with Semmelknödel and a mushroom sauce, two different potato salads one with sausages. There was soo much yummi yummi food
So much more is coming soon…
Having a look back to these first two weeks I have to admit I’m very happy being back in Ireland and excited for the next things. For instance, next week is Fresher’s week which means lots of Parties also sport clubs and societies present themselves and try to get you signed into their team! But also the courses going to get tougher and I already see all those hours of studying amongst other things like sitting in this beautiful library which is build in an old church!
No worries, I won’t forget to write and go on telling you from my travels in New Zealand, Australia, Singapore and all the trips I did during summer and I will do in Ireland!
